Dawn W.

LanguageBird ASL Instructor

My name is DW. I am from Florida but currently in Washington, DC where I have lived for the past 3 years. I am Deaf and use ASL as my primary language along with written English and Spanish. I completed my undergraduate work in Psychology and Education. I received my Bachelor of Arts from Gallaudet University. I also have advanced degrees in Technology Integration and Counseling Psychology. Technology and how it enhances life has been a passion of mine since high school. I began my career teaching Deaf and Hard of Hearing middle school students. I worked in Deaf Education for 15 years and have taught ASL for 5 years. My teaching ASL has been in mostly virtual environments in small and large group environments and as a support for self-paced instruction. I enjoy working with Deaf learners and teaching ASL because of my own experiences as a child. My life’s work in advocating for access and language exposure. It is pertinent for deaf children and their academic growth. Equally, having peers (both deaf and non-deaf with whom they can communicate with is pertinent to not only their academic growth but social-emotional growth. The more exposure people have to deaf culture and ASL, the more accessibility in the near future. I am passionate about the language and culture and look forward to sharing it with you. In my free time, I enjoy crafting, photography, traveling, and reading comic books. I am a Disney fanatic. I also serve as the Home Region (DC, MD, VA) Representative for Gallaudet’s Alumni board, give presentations on Deaf education and the Deaf experience, and am active in several other community, professional, and deaf organizations.
