Your Top 10 Questions Answered

For more than a decade, LanguageBird has provided 100% live, one-to-one, private instruction from native-level instructors in 15 world languages at all stages of study.

Our programs include middle and high school courses, tutoring, test prep, conversational lessons, and the Global Seal of Biliteracy.

We’ve answered the top 10 questions we hear to help you get started!

1. How do students and instructors meet?

We pair each student with a native-level instructor, and the student schedules lessons directly. All sessions are live and one-to-one via secure video conferencing. No software-driven learning—just real connection, conversation, and coaching.

2. How are students placed in a level?

We guide students to select the most appropriate level based on their prior experience. Instructors offer placement advice and may recommend review or acceleration if needed. Everything is designed to meet students where they are.

3. How do students earn high school credit?

LanguageBird is accredited by WASC and Cognia, and our courses are UC A-G and NCAA approved. Upon program completion, we issue transcripts and can work directly with schools to ensure credit transfer and reporting compliance.

4. What is LanguageBird’s teaching philosophy?

LanguageBird offers personalized, one-to-one courses that focus on real-world language use. We use the communicative method and project-based learning, focusing on practical fluency and intercultural competence.

We align our programs to ACTFL Can-Do Statements and the World Readiness Standards.

5. How are students evaluated?

Instructors provide written feedback after each session. Students complete a final project to demonstrate mastery and receive a rubric-based evaluation and transcript.

Upon completion, we issue an official transcript that can be sent to middle schools, high schools, or colleges via US mail or through Parchment online.

6. How much homework is there?

Students should expect 1–3 hours of study or practice between lessons, depending on pace and program type.

7. Can LanguageBird support students with special learning needs?

Yes. Because instruction is one-to-one, we can tailor the pace and approach for gifted students, students with IEPs/504s, and others with diverse learning needs. We train our instructors to support individualized learning plans.

8. When can students start a program?

Anytime. We offer rolling enrollment, and programs can be paused or adjusted based on the student’s schedule.

9. How long does it take to finish a program?

A full-year program includes 24 one-hour lessons with an instructor, plus 1–3 hours of homework or study between sessions. A semester program consists of 12 one-hour lessons.

Pacing is flexible and based on the student’s schedule, availability, and goals. Most students take 2 lessons per week, completing a full-year program in 12 weeks. If their schedule allows, students can take 3 or 4 lessons per week and finish in 6-8 weeks.

You have eight months to complete a full-year program and four months for a semester program.

10. What if a student needs to change a scheduled lesson?

Lessons are flexible. Students can reschedule with 24 hours’ notice and have 8 months (full year) or 4 months (semester) to complete the course.
