Your Top 10 Questions, Answered

1. How do students and instructors meet?

Students schedule lessons directly with their paired instructor and meet with them via live video chat.

At LanguageBird, we believe language learning thrives on connection. Our programs help students build confidence and fluency by working with native-level speakers. Unlike programs that rely on software, LanguageBird connects people. Each program is fully personalized to the student’s needs, pace, and interests.

Students should enroll in the level they feel best matches their experience. For example, if a student has successfully completed two years of a high school program, we recommend enrolling in Level 3, the next sequential level.

If there are knowledge gaps, instructors may suggest additional independent study to ensure success. In rare cases, an instructor might recommend adjusting the level to better meet the student where they are.

LanguageBird is accredited by WASC and Cognia, and approved by the NCAA and University of California for A-G courses, ensuring recognition by schools worldwide. Transcripts are issued upon request at the end of the program.

If your high school requires world language credits for graduation, we recommend discussing your plan with your school counselor. Most high schools require 2 years of world language. Some schools may require a concurrent enrollment form and a LanguageBird transcript upon program completion.

If graduation requirements are already met, no school permission is needed. LanguageBird can send transcripts directly to colleges upon your request. We’re happy to assist with school administrators or counselors as needed!

LanguageBird offers personalized, one-to-one courses that focus on real-world language use. Our approach is based on the communicative method and project-based learning, helping students engage in language through authentic, contextual tasks rather than just memorization.

The goal is for students to gain confidence and competence in using the language effectively and appropriately in a variety of situations, enhancing both their communication and intercultural skills.

Our standards align with 21st-century learning skills, the World Readiness Standards’ five “C” goal areas (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities), and the ACTFL Can-Do Statements, all emphasizing the practical application of language beyond the classroom.

After each lesson, students receive detailed teacher notes, including session topics, homework, or study assignments, and a rubric review to track progress.

At the end of the program, students complete a final project, which includes both an oral presentation and a written submission.

Upon completion, we issue an official transcript that can be sent to middle schools, high schools, or colleges via US mail or through Parchment online.

Students have 1–3 hours of homework and study between lessons.

Because we teach one-on-one, we tailor the curriculum to each student’s needs including accommodations for gifted learners, and students with an IEP or 504. We ensure that language learning is accessible to all students.

Our instructors are trained to work with students with diverse learning needs, and we encourage you to share any specific requirements when matching with an instructor. It’s extremely rare that we can’t accommodate a student’s needs.

You can start anytime. LanguageBird has open enrollment.

Flexibility at LanguageBird means students choose when to start, how often to meet each week, and what time of day lessons work best. Once chosen, lessons are scheduled for a specific day and time (on the :00 or :30 mark) and run for a full hour. This balance of consistency and choice allows for true progress in the language without sacrificing convenience.

A full-year program includes 24 one-hour lessons with an instructor, plus 1–3 hours of homework or study between sessions. A semester program consists of 12 one-hour lessons.

Pacing is flexible and based on the student’s schedule, availability, and goals. Most students take 2 lessons per week, completing a full-year program in 12 weeks. If their schedule allows, students can take 3 or 4 lessons per week and finish in 6–8 weeks.

Students book lessons directly with their instructor. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please email your instructor at least 24 hours in advance. Lessons can be paused for events, vacations, or emergencies.

You have eight months to complete a full-year program and four months for a semester program. Just be sure to communicate with your instructor to adjust your schedule as needed.
