Sarah H.

LanguageBird American Sign Language Instructor

Hi! My name is Sarah Holokai. I will be your American Sign Language instructor! I live in Cleveland, Ohio. I have been an intervention specialist (special education teacher) for over 19 years. I have worked with students in grades preschool through 12th grade. My Bachelor’s degree is in Deaf Education from Kent State University. My first Master’s degree is from Cleveland State University in Curriculum and Instruction. My second Master’s degree is from Wright State University in Advanced Curriculum and Instruction and Professional Development. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. It wasn’t until I began working at Toys R Us as a Pokémon League Coach that I decided to become a Deaf Education teacher. One of my favourite league players was a little girl named Lauren who was Deaf. Lauren and her mom taught me how to sign. American Sign Language (ASL) is a beautiful, visual language that is so much fun to learn. Deaf Culture is awesome, too, and you will marvel at the interesting nuances in sign, funny humor, and extraordinary community that is “Big D Deaf”. I am a very flexible, empathetic teacher who loves working with students. I hope you will grow enjoy ASL and Deaf Culture as much as I do and look forward to your lesson time. I can’t wait to work with you!
Fondly,
Sarah Holokai
