How do I get high school credit?
If you have not met your high school graduation requirements for world language, we recommend you talk to your school counselor and let them know you would like to take a LanguageBird® course. Most college-prep high schools require 2 years of world language. Some high schools will have you fill out a concurrent enrollment form or ask you to send a transcript once your LanguageBird® course is complete. We are happy to work with your high school administrator and counselors!

Choose from courses for credit, tutoring and test prep, conversation lessons or a combination!
COURSES FOR CREDIT
Accredited high school Sign Language courses with a private instructor at your pace and convenience.
Students build upon and increase listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in the target language. Students develop their Sign Language proficiency through extensive, spontaneous interaction with a native speaker in the language.
Students develop cultural awareness and become prepared to encounter real life situations outside of the classroom through discussions of cultural customs and behavior, videos, Internet research and by reading authentic materials written in the target language.
TUTORING & TEST PREP
Students receive private, one-to-one, live tutoring sessions geared toward reiterating concepts covered in their school classroom.
Tutors address any difficulties students may be having and help with homework and test preparation. Regularly scheduled lessons are recommended, rather than just for “emergency” situations. It’s best if the student consistently builds skills as well as a personal relationship with their tutor.
The lessons can also be geared toward helping students prepare for exams, including but not limited to: SAT Subject Tests, AP and fluency exams.
This is live, one-to-one communicative Sign Language lessons to cover elementary and intermediate grammatical structures of Sign Language, as well as vocabulary and cultural situations with a native speaker.
These lessons are designed to help students develop and mature foundational communicative skills to prepare them for everyday conversations in Sign Language. In addition, the student will master their fluency through the stylized nature of the course. Conversation lessons are open to students of all ages.

Sign Language Instructors
Our approach to education is personal, dynamic.
Innovative learning activities, unique assessments, and student directed projects engage students. Instructors take notes during each session to share with students and evaluate students over time based on personal progress. We don’t believe in timed exams. We do believe in giving students the opportunity to present what they have learned in a format and environment in which they are comfortable. Final projects are presented to the instructor during the final session of the course along with any required written components.
Why Choose an Online High School Language Program?
Enrolling your student in a LanguageBird course offers greater freedom and flexibility for their learning than what is typically found in a traditional brick-and-mortar high school environment. All of our faculty are experienced instructors in the field of education, not just native speakers. Our trained, experienced teachers love to work with high school students. Students meet with the same teacher building a relationship and skills. Students use our courses to make more room in their daily school schedule, to get ahead, make-up a class or study a language not offered at their school.
We provide students with the most personalized, one-to-one, learning experience.

Online Sign Language Classes Strengthen the Foundation for Learning and Communication (Higher SAT Scores Too)
Multiple studies have proven that high school students who learn American Sign Language (ASL) and are capable of signing the alphabet gain improved spelling skills. Signing leaves a larger imprint on the brain that makes it easier for one to remember complicated spellings. Furthermore, because we have muscles that have their own micro-memories, the ability to sign a word, in addition to speaking it, makes words easier to remember. In fact, students who took online sign language classes scored significantly higher on the SATs than students who took a spoken language. Even foreign educational institutes praise American Sign Language. The Manitoba School District in Canada has said that learning ASL offers tons of value in that, in addition to learning a second language, it provides the opportunity for students to question and challenge their own values, cultural assumptions, and perspectives that contribute positively to our society as a whole.
Where did Online Sign Language Classes Evolve From?
According to historians, Aristotle was the first to make a recorded claim about the deaf. His theory was that the only way to learning and receiving an education was through hearing a spoken language. Therefore, deaf individuals were deemed ignorant and unable to be educated. For centuries the deaf were denied their fundamental rights, and in some regions they weren’t allowed to get married, have children, buy property, and they were forced to have guardians. Ultimately, they were considered to be sub-human.
When the Renaissance rolled in, Europe disputed Aristotle’s claim as scholars began educating mass cohorts of the deaf population for the first time in 2,000 years. This milestone in history is what started the creation of a signed language.
In more recent history pioneers in Sign Language like Hellen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan continued to prove that the deaf (Keller was both deaf and blind) could communicate and learn. In fact, Keller graduated from college in 1904 and went on to be known as one of the most prolific thought leaders in American history.
Why Take Online Sign Language Classes as Opposed to Traditional On-Campus Classes?
Being a high school student is a full-time job. What with studying, sports, other extracurricular activities, and volunteer work (things that look good on transcripts) taking a second language on campus just eats into the day and adds more stress. In addition, we all learn differently and process information at varying learning paces. Since the average public high school has a teacher-to-student ratio of 1-to-30, most students lack the attention required to learn the language and earn the credits required to graduate.
Taking online Sign Language classes from companies like LanguageBird removes these barriers, as students are able to take their online classes with live, certified instructors in real-time face-to-face lessons when it is convenient for them. In other words, kids can take online Sign Language classes on the weekend, early in the morning before school, or right after Monday Night Football before going to bed. Being able to create one’s own schedule helps high school students tremendously, and this enables to overall better grades across the board.
In addition, online Sign Language classes from LanguageBird offers one-on-one instruction where teachers give each student their undivided attention. This allows students to get a customized approach relevant to their learning style so they can truly learn the language and comprehend it at a high level–something traditional classes on campus simply can’t offer.
Call LanguageBird today and take that first step into setting your kids up for their future success. We offer an NCAA accredited (and other accreditations) program that will likely meet the guidelines of your child’s high school and top desired colleges. Talk to your child’s school counselor to ensure the credits will transfer over and give us a call.

An Online Sign Language Tutor Lets Students Learn on their Time.
The life of high school students is actually a full-time job. Between attending classes, studying, participating in sports, partaking in other extra curricular activities like playing an instrument or participating on the debate team, and doing volunteer work (many do), there are also family obligations that play into life. This means a window of time to meet with an online Sign Language tutor can be minimal, and this is why high school students need an online Sign Language tutor who will teach them, on their time, whether that is at 6AM, 10PM or on weekends. When you invest in a high-quality online Sign Language tutor, you get the freedom of learning at your convenience.
