Amy R.

American Sign Language Instructor

Hello! I am originally from New York City. I started to learn American Sign Language when I was a little girl, I knew young Deaf person in my area. I officially took ASL when I attended New York University to earn my bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology. When I graduated, I took a position as a speech-language therapist in J47 ASL/English Secondary School. I worked at this school for five years teaching both Deaf, hard-of-hearing and hearing students that had either a language or learning disability. In 2011, I decided to move abroad and help in a Deaf community in Dominican Republic. While there I met my husband, Serfirys, who is Deaf. We just celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary. We have two children now, they are considered CODAs and, it’s amazing to see them communicate in ASL. I have over ten years’ experience teaching online and in person, I love teaching. I am excited to help you enter the Deaf community by being your guide to the language and culture. Honestly, learning ASL changed my life in ways only now I can appreciate. I know learning ASL will open doors of opportunities for you to enrich your life. Hope to sign with you in the virtual classroom soon.
