Sherry A.

American Sign Language Instructor

Hello! My name is Sherry and I am so excited about the opportunity to meet you! I knew at a young age that I was losing my hearing. I was lucky that my parents exposed me to ASL when I was 6 years old by taking me to classes. When I was 16, I became involved in the Deaf community and eventually became an interpreter. I was able to interpret for many years until I lost my hearing. After a surgery, I now have 30% hearing in one ear.
I’ve been teaching ASL since 2006. I started teaching at the University level at Portland State University, I am very excited about teaching now at LanguageBird. My teaching philosophy is simple. I feel it is important to have fun while learning any language and also I feel learning about the culture of a language is critical.

I live up in the mountains in Northern Oregon with my horses, donkeys, dogs, snake, and indoor pig named Jimmy Dean! I am an avid horse endurance racer, so if I’m not teaching, you’ll find me on the back of a horse somewhere! I look forward to meeting you!
