Katie L.

LanguageBird American Sign Language Instructor

Hello! My name is Katelyn, but everyone calls me Katie! I was born and raise outside of Charlotte in North Carolina, and I absolutely love living near the city but far away enough to enjoy quietness. I am profoundly Deaf and ASL is my primary language. Growing up mainstreamed, I was fortunate enough to be able to still interact with the Deaf community by attending to numerous camps. Upon graduating from a mainstream public school, I attended to Gardner-Webb University which is located in a one-stop light town. There, I majored in American Sign Language with a concentration in Intercultural Communication. Internships were required to graduate, so that is when I discovered my love for ASL teaching by working closely with a few professors as their assistant. To further my education, I attended to Gallaudet University and obtained my master’s degree in Sign Language Education. Ever since, I have established the first ASL program in the Charlotte school district at a high school and have been working there since.

Outside of academics, I love traveling and trying new things! Living close to the city, I love taking a day to try a new restaurant or a coffee shop. My fiancé and I are season ticket holders to the Charlotte Hornets, so we are definitely big basketball fans. Being an aunt to four boys and a girl has been a wonderful joy in my life outside of my sweet mini-labradoodle, Kai.
