I was born and raised in Tokyo, and have always had a love for music. I attended a music conservatory in Tokyo, and upon graduating I was invited to go to the Rose Parade in Pasadena, CA with my old high school band. It was there that I made connections to eventually move to Las Vegas, where I earned a Master’s Degree in music from University of Nevada Las Vegas. During my graduate studies, I tutored undergraduate students taking Japanese language classes as well as guiding Japanese international students in their transitions to life in America. These experiences showed me how similar language is to music, and how I can apply all I’ve learned in 30 years of teaching music, both private students and classes, to students studying Japanese. For the past 5 years, I have been involved with the North American Taiko community, and had many opportunities to connect with another aspect of my culture and translate for Japanese teachers to American students. I look forward to sharing my experience and having fun with you as we explore “real” Japanese language and culture.
